There are children with leukaemia, muscular dystrophy, genetic defects and many other disorders. The scientists at the Children’s Medical Research Institute are working to try to prevent these diseases before they occur in our children, or where that is not possible to develop better treatments.

Continence Awareness Week (CAW) is one of the largest health promotion activity managed by the Continence Foundation of Australia (CFA). CAW is primarily funded by the Australian Government under the Continence Awareness and Support Project, an initiative of the National Continence Management Strategy. CAW is actively promoted by members of the CFA, the Australian Government and related peak body, consumer and professional groups. The CFA will target 'children' as the primary group followed by 'mothers', using a family dynamic approach.

Gold Bow Day will raise awareness of recent thyroid cancer research stating that thyroid cancer in NSW has increased by 84% in women and 40% in men over the past 10 years. Money raised from gold bow sales will go towards improving the environment of radioactive treatment Rooms in public hospitals throughout Australia. Thyroid cancer patients are isolated in these treatment rooms for a 3-4 days, whilst undergoing radioactive iodine treatment. This treatment is given to thyroid cancer patients after surgery to remove their thyroid gland.

It was once diagnosed only in children, but we now know that it persists into adulthood for many. Although the symptoms seem benign, they can cause severe problems in social, academic, and work settings. Early identification and treatment are extremely important, as they help many people with ADHD to become very successful in life.

Relay for Life is overnight team event to fight cancer whereby teams take turns to run or walk around a track and raise vital funds that go towards cancer support and services for Territorians. Teams register and spend the months in the lead up to the event raising money that goes towards providing a range of support and services to reduce the impact of cancer on Territorians Last year this unique event drew over 50 teams and raised invaluable money to assist in the care of Territorians with cancer and their families.

The Bicycle NSW Ride2Work program is encouraging workplaces to keep a track on the number of employees choosing to get on their bikes and ride all or part of their journey to work. Research shows that regular monitoring increases likelihood and motivation to change and adopt a new behaviour – in this case riding to work! We are asking workplaces once a month to get online and complete a simple Ride2Work survey – anyone within the organisation can do this.

Traditionally, this has been Bonnie Babes biggest and most important fund raising event. Nutrition Australia has adopted the 5 year theme of ‘Falling in Love with Food’. Nutrition Week enjoys the support of a multitude of government organisations and non-government organisations.

Carers Week is an awareness week held during October each year right across Australia. The event was established to promote and raise awareness of the valuable role that carers play in our community and to generate discussion about carer issues. Carers Week also provides an opportunity for carers to come together, support one another and share ideas and information.

Northern Territory children in both urban and rural areas are three times more likely to die or to be injured than children living elsewhere in Australia. This frightening statistic is due in part to the Northern Territory's unique climate and geography, as well as our lifestyle and culture. The Northern Territory Division of Kidsafe began in 1983 and works to reduce the terrible toll of accidents on Territory children.

The objective of the Symposium is to provide health care practitioners in the region with the opportunity to learn more about the latest treatments and interventions for people with complex diabetes and to debate the challenges of preventing and effectively managing diabetes and cardiovascular disease in Central Australia. Some of the topics include a review of epidemiology and public health aspects of diabetes, consideration of cardiovascular complications of diabetes and a review of current international trends in screening and diagnosis. There will also be a half day planning workshop to discuss future care and prevention strategies in diabetes and cardiovascular disease care in remote communities.Registrations can be made via our website at www.bakeridi.edu.au or by contacting the symposium co-ordinator on 1300 728 900.

World COPD Day on 18 November is a global effort to expand understanding of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and advocate for better care for patients. Currently 210 million people have the illness, according to 2007 WHO estimates. WHO predicts that COPD will become the third leading cause of death worldwide by 2030. Key risk factors for COPD are tobacco smoking, indoor and outdoor air pollution, and exposure to occupational dusts and chemicals.

International Volunteer Day (IVD) was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985. IVD is now celebrated world wide with thousands of volunteers involved in a range of IVD initiatives including clean-up campaigns, conferences, exhibitions, morning teas and many other activities all aimed to highlight the role of volunteers in their communities.
