Territorians are urged to become an organ donor to save or improve the lives of up to 10 people during Australian Organ Donor Awareness Week.
Almost 2,000 Australians are on the waiting list to receive an organ transplant while each year an average of only 200 donors provide organs to those who are waiting.
Every donor can potentially donate their heart, 2 lungs and 2 kidneys, liver, pancreas, 2 eyes, skin and bone.
During the week beginning February 18, LifeNet NT will be raising awareness of organ and tissue donation by undertaking promotional activities including displays on:
· February 19 - Casuarina Square
· February 21 - Palmerston Shopping Centre
- Yeperenye Shopping Centre (Alice Springs)
· February 22 - Darwin Mall
· February 26 - Charles Darwin University
NT Organ Donor Coordinator Ms Lee Wood says anyone over the age of 18 can become an organ donor.
"Age isn't a barrier and you can still be a donor if you smoke, drink alcohol, wear glasses or are a diabetic. Even if some of your organs aren't medically suitable, others probably are.
"There are currently 1875 Australians on the waiting list for a transplant but, unfortunately, Australia has one of the lowest rates of organ and tissue donation in developed countries and many people on the transplant list will die before a suitable organ becomes available.
"By becoming an organ donor you can save or improve the lives of up to 10 people" she says.
Ms Wood says Territorians should discuss with their friends and family about donating their organs.
"It can be a difficult and sensitive subject but it is important to discuss your views regarding organ donation. This informs your friends and family of your wishes and increases the likelihood that your consent to donate will be carried out."
While many Australian states previously registered donors via their drivers licence, it is now only possible to register through the Australian Organ Donor Register (AODR) by calling 1800 777 203, visiting your local Medicare office or online at http://www.medicareaustralia.gov.au.
