A nationally-recognised expert in oral health will perform a soft tissue biopsy on a camel tongue as part of an oral health medicine workshop for dentists in Alice Springs today-Friday 10 July 2009.
University of Melbourne's Dental School Associate Professor in Oral Medicine, Michael McCullough, will hold the workshop in the conference room of Flynn Drive Dental Clinic between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm.
The workshop will cover topics including oral cancer, xerostomia (dry mouth), and oro-facial (mouth and face) pain, as well as the demonstration of a soft tissue biopsy.
Flynn Drive Dental Remote Manager Dr Elise Beachley said that the workshop would help local staff to detect oral cancer in patients.
"The risk of oral cancer is particularly high amongst Aboriginal people.
"Learning how to take biopsies and get them assessed quickly will enable our staff in Alice Springs to save more lives by detecting the oral cancer in its early stages," said Dr Beachley.
