It is safe to consume fish and mud crabs gathered from deep water in Darwin harbour if normal hygiene and temperature control practices relating to transportation and preparation are followed. These include the thorough cooking of fish and mud crabs before eating.
However, the Department of Health and Families has advised against the consumption of shellfish collected from Darwin's East Point, Vesteys, Mindil, Nightcliff and Casuarina beaches, following the detection of high levels of the E.coli bacteria in sea water sampling results in recent days.
Media please note: Further results from water sampling will not be received until after the long weekend.
