Drovers will have a ball

With plummeting temperatures in Alice Springs the best way to really turn up the heat is at the Drovers Ball this Saturday 13 June from 6.30 pm.

Since 2007 'The Drovers' has been Alice Springs Hospital's volunteer service, with members providing support, information and assistance to patients throughout their stay in the hospital. The Drovers Ball, held annually as a major fundraising event for the hospital's volunteers, allows the group to purchase much needed items that contribute to patient care.

Alice Springs Hospital General Manager Vicki Taylor said The Drovers has been invaluable since its inception.

"The Drovers have expanded to an almost 70-strong team of dedicated volunteers who work at the hospital seven days a week-including Christmas.

"They perform daily rounds of the hospital wards and supply books, magazines, toiletries, puzzles, cards and other things to help patients pass the time and cater for their needs. Drovers also chauffeur patients to the bus depot or airport and will even run simple errands for patients who are far from the support of family and friends.

Ms Taylor said local businesses and organisations have put together an auction at the ball that will raise money for future Drovers undertakings.

"Last year the Drovers Ball and auction raised more than $18,000. I'm sure we can raise even more this year with paintings, carvings, a didgeridoo, gift certificates and an airfare up for grabs."

Department of Health and Families Chief Executive Dr David Ashbridge is looking forward to attending the ball.

"The Drovers provide a service highly valued by the Department and Alice Springs Hospital. I would like to personally thank them for the wonderful contribution they make to the Hospital and its patients."

The MC for the evening is local professional speaker Dwight Frew and guests will be serenaded with music from Alice Springs bands 'In Tatters' and 'The Chanfloozies with Johnny Skidd'.
