Getting the medicine you need is now safer and easier with the introduction of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) to public hospitals in the Northern Territory.
The PBS was developed by the Australian Government to ensure that all Australian residents and eligible visitors have access to the necessary and life-saving medicines at an affordable price.
Under the changes patients will receive up to one month's supply of medication when discharged from hospital or when they attend a public hospital as an outpatient.
Department of Health and Families Executive Director of Acute Care Peter Beirne said that by receiving a larger quantity of medicines, patients will have more time to seek advice from their General Practitioner or health clinics about ongoing treatment.
"The changes will improve your level of care as you move from the hospital back into the community."
"Many medicines cost much more than the price that you pay, but the Australian Government provides a subsidy so that you pay much less."
"The new changes mean that medicines you receive will cost you about the same as it would at your local pharmacy," said Mr Beirne.
Most medicines that are prescribed by doctors are listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.
