*Media are invited to attend. Key speaker Dr Gavin Chin, Director of Rehabilitation Services, will be available for interviews.
A conference to discuss improving rehabilitation service delivery for Territorians begins in Darwin today.
Health practitioners and stakeholders are invited to attend the free two-day Physical and Cognitive Rehabilitation with an Aboriginal Perspective Conference, which is being held at Charles Darwin University's Casuarina campus.
The conference, organised by the NT Rehabilitation Clinical Reference Group, will bring together more than 30 guest speakers, including traditional healers, therapists, Aboriginal health workers and medical specialists.
Speakers during the conference include Menzies Indigenous Development Unit Manager Bilawara Lee, Occupational Therapist Robyn Glynn, and Neuro Psychologist Mark Reid.
A wide range of topics and case studies will be presented and discussed over the two days, including:
- the use of psychological and neuropsychological assessments in an Indigenous population
- patient education
- traditional healing methods
- nutrition and rehabilitation in the Top End
- trans-disciplinary rehabilitation in a remote setting
- building Aboriginal Primary Health Care in the NT
- developing rehabilitation resources for Indigenous people.
The conference will also include a panel discussion chaired by Dr Howard Flavell, Rehabilitation Medical Specialist with the NT Rehabilitation Network.
Director of Rehabilitation Services Dr Gavin Chin said the conference would give health practitioners and stakeholders a chance to hear from highly credentialed speakers.
"The conference has secured top level speakers with the aim of improving rehabilitation service delivery to all Territorians and in particular, to Aboriginal people in remote areas," he said.
"The conference has generated widespread interest from all regions of the NT and from interstate."
A one-day conference covering the same topics will be held in Alice Springs at the Centre for Remote Health on Monday 15 June.
