The disability sector in the Northern Territory will be receiving specialist training over the next two weeks in both Darwin and Alice Springs.
The aim of the training is to provide the disability sector including carers with the necessary tools to support those with a disability in their pursuit for quality of life.
The seminars will be delivered by leading Clinical Psychologist Gary Radler who has 30 years experience in providing support to children and adults with a disability.
"The workshops are all about what we can do to help people with a disability to lead the lives they want"
"We have focused in particular on how we can recognise everyone's strengths and how we can provide opportunities and skilled support"
"The bottom-line is that people with a disability enjoy a better life when they are involved, engaged and active," Mr Radler said.
In the first session Gary Radler discussed the 5 signposts for quality of life for those with a disability and the practical applications of these signposts. The 5 signposts are:
Control (over one's decisions and goals)
Dignity
Respect
Participation (in all areas of life)
Skills (development where required to meet the person's goals)
The training package includes promotion of the Positive Behaviour Support model for people with an intellectual disability.
The seminar is in Darwin from the 4 - 8th of February and in Alice Springs from the
11 - 15th of February.
Up to 100 people are expected to participate in the Darwin seminars.
