Human Swine Flu case confirmed

Pathology on swabs taken from a passenger arriving in Darwin from Melbourne on Friday 29 May on Virgin Blue flight DJ 1457 has shown positive on first testing for H1N1 influenza (human swine flu).

The woman had been in Melbourne for the previous two weeks. On Thursday 28 May she experienced a runny nose and sore throat, and by Friday morning had progressed to high fevers, muscle pain, cough, runny nose, diarrhoea and vomiting.

She attended a GP surgery in Darwin on Friday night and later attended Royal Darwin Hospital emergency department. On both occasions she wore a mask and is now in home isolation. Her contacts in Darwin are well and are in home quarantine with Tamiflu medication. They will also be monitored by the Centre for Disease Control.

Flight contact information has been sent to the National H1N1 Incident Room for follow up of passenger contacts.

The H1N1 pathology result will be sent to the WHO lab in Melbourne for final confirmation, with the result expected to be received on Monday afternoon.
