A Nhulunbuy midwife has been recognised nationally - receiving the 2008 "Hospital Midwife Excellence Award" in Adelaide earlier this month.
The award recognises the significant contribution that Ms Louise Pool as a rural midwife has made and the strength she has shown in overcoming the challenges of practicing outside a big maternity hospital.
Ms Pool has worked as a midwife at Gove District Hospital since December 2004 and, as part of her role, co-heads Gove's participation in a Menzies School of Health clinical trial into Fetal Fibrinectin which indicates the imminent onset of labour.
Gove District Hospital General Manager Doug Gilchrist said Louise is a worthy winner.
"It's very satisfying for the hospital and the community to see one of our staff receive a national award for excellence in midwifery.
"Louise has made a significant contribution to our small team through her support to students, new staff and current team members," said Mr Gilchrist.
