Mindil Beach now safe for swimming

22 June 2010

The precautionary advice for swimming at Mindil Beach has been lifted after extensive testing showed E.coli levels in the sea water in this area had reduced significantly and no longer posed a risk to public health.

Precautionary advice for swimming, fishing and collection of seafood at all Darwin beaches has now been lifted.

While the beaches have been opened DHF still advises people to be on the lookout for blue green algae and avoid direct contact as it can cause skin, eye and respiratory irritation.

If contact does occur, the affected area should be rinsed vigorously with soap and fresh water as soon as possible. If irritation persists see your medical practitioner.

If further information is required, please contact the DHF Environmental Health hotline on toll free 1800 095 646.
