The Wurrimiyanga Well Being Centre at Nguiu, Bathurst Island was opened today (Thursday 8 October).
The Centre is a purpose-built facility designed to provide services promoting wellness and the prevention of ill-health. It was built, designed and named in consultation with the traditional owners of Nguiu.
"This is a very exciting and proud day for the residents of Nguiu. The Wurrimiyanga Well Being Centre will provide a range of services and community programs that promote wellness," said Tricia Wake, NT Director of Remote Health.
"The Centre will focus on programs around public health, environmental health, sexual health and social and emotional wellbeing," Ms Wake said.
The Centre features interview rooms, offices, a multipurpose space and a large undercover outdoor area for group workshops. At least six staff members of Department of Health and Families (DHF) staff, who currently work at the Nguiu Health Centre will be working from the Centre. It will also be available for Non-Government Organisations to conduct educational programs.
Ms Wake praised the efforts of traditional owners and members of the Nguiu Community, which were integral to the realisation of the project.
"The Nguiu community was involved with the creation of the Centre from the start of the project, providing input into the design of the facility, and advising on the types of services that will be made available," Ms Wake said.
"The community decided that a purpose-built facility was the best way to deliver wellness programs and services, and the result is here for us to celebrate today."
"It's a great example of how local communities understand the importance of preventing illness and disease, rather than relying on a cure. It is a terrific tribute to the people of Bathurst Island."
The construction of the Wurrimiyanga Well Being Centre was an outcome of 99-year leasing negotiations between the traditional owners and other community members of Nguiu - Tiwi Islands, the Commonwealth Government and DHF.
A Commonwealth commitment of $1 million was pledged for the improvement of health issues facing the Tiwi Islands. DHF will provide funding for staffing and maintenance of the Centre. The Centre will operate Monday through Friday from 8.30 am - 4. 30 pm.
