Northern TerritoryH1N1 Influenza update

A Darwin woman in her early 40s died at Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) on Saturday night (15 August 2009) following admission on 22 July 2009 with medical conditions that included H1N1 Influenza.

RDH has expressed sympathy to the bereaved family for their sad loss.

Presently 17 patients are hospitalised at RDH for conditions that include H1N1 Influenza. Three are in intensive care.

The NT Centre for Disease Control has reminded pregnant women and anyone with underlying chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes, lung, heart and kidney disease, and Aboriginal people, to take extra care and consult their doctor immediately if they experience flu-like symptoms.

Anyone who has moderate to severe symptoms of influenza, or notices their condition deteriorating, should seek immediate medical assistance.

Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza and seasonal flu can also occasionally affect people who have previously been fit and well, so it is important that everyone continues to be vigilant.

Practising good hygiene will reduce the spread of Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza. This includes covering the nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and disposing of tissues promptly after use. Hands should be washed often with soap and water, particularly if flu symptoms are present.
