Online one-stop shop to combat family violence

The Department of Health and Families (DHF) has launched a new web site aimed at improving community access to vital information on domestic and family violence, including legislation about mandatory reporting.

"This new site is part of the Government's campaign demonstrating that each of us has a role to play in reporting domestic and family violence in the Northern Territory," Northern Territory Families and Children (NTFC) Executive Director Jenny Scott said today.

"It is a one-stop shop offering a range of information for the public and service providers, including resources for frontline staff working with people affected by domestic and family violence.

"The site explains legal obligations to report serious incidents of domestic and family violence. It helps send the message that family violence is not acceptable and that we, as individuals and a community, will not sit by and let it happen," Ms Scott said.

The web site contains detailed, easily-accessed information for the public, including a flowchart explaining the reporting process, and frequently asked questions. It also features clips of TV and radio commercials encouraging everyone to take responsibility for preventing and reporting domestic and family violence.

"For those working to address domestic and family violence, this web resource provides information regarding best-practice risk assessment, safety planning, staff safety, and suggestions to assist in implementing the new mandatory reporting of domestic violence requirements.

"Family and domestic violence is one of society's most important challenges and this suite of web-based material is an important step in the campaign to address it," Ms Scott added.

The address for the new site is www.stopfamilyviolence.nt.gov.au
