Precautionary advice on eating fish and shellfish from Darwin Harbour

16 June 2010

Following the recent closure of Darwin beaches due to elevated levels of E. coli and algae, the Department of Health and Families has continued its precautionary advice that shellfish collected from these beaches in shallow water should not be consumed.

Fishing in deeper water within Darwin Harbour is not affected by this advice.

DHF reminds the general public that fish and mud crabs should be transported and prepared with the standard recommended attention to hygiene and temperature control, and be cooked thoroughly before eating.

Testing of seafood is being undertaken to identify any risks to public health. Results of this testing may result in the lifting of the precautionary advice.

Anyone who has concerns can contact the DHF Environmental Health hotline on toll free 1800 095 646.
