Tennant Creek water boil advice lifted

25 November 2011

Water from the Tennant Creek town supply has been declared safe to drink, following confirmation today that samples are now free of harmful bacteria.

The Environmental Health branch of the Department of Health (DoH) has lifted the Precautionary Advice for Drinking Water (Water Boil Alert) for Tennant Creek issued on Wednesday 23 November 2011.

DoH Senior Program Development Officer Karen Beirne said the water boil alert was issued after routine sampling identified the presence of E.coli. The bacteria are an indicator of faecal pollution and the possible presence of other harmful bacterial.

Ms Beirne said, "Power and Water has taken steps to disinfect the water supply and ensure that it is safe to drink."
