Two more Darwin beaches reopen

21 June 2010

The precautionary advice for swimming at Vesteys and Dinah beaches has been lifted after extensive testing showed  E.coli levels in the sea water in these areas had reduced significantly and no longer posed a risk to public health.

Precautionary samples taken on the other side of the harbour at Mandorah Beach, Wagait Beach and Woods Inlet confirm the water quality to be high and within required guideline levels. Further, there was no evidence of the marine blue-green algae Lyngbya majuscula on the foreshore in these areas.

Mindil Beach is now the only beach remaining closed.  Initial samples have indicated good water quality and results of confirmatory water samples taken today will be available late tomorrow afternoon. Should the results identify good water quality, the precautionary advice will be lifted.

Blue-green algae remains on the foreshore in the Fannie Bay area. DHF reminds the public that direct contact with the algae should be avoided as it can cause skin, eye and respiratory irritation. If contact does occur, the affected area should be rinsed vigorously with soap and fresh water as soon as possible. If irritation persists see your medical practitioner.
