What does NT youth want?

Young Territorians are being encouraged to have their say in the annual Mission Australia Youth Survey, which closes on 14 August.

The Department of Health and Families (DHF) Office of Youth Affairs urges all NT youth aged 11 to 24 years to complete the survey.

The results of the survey are widely published and provide information for community groups and social policy makers to tailor policies and programs for young Australians.

"Young people's concerns are volatile-they jump around from year to year-so to obtain an accurate picture it's important we conduct this survey annually, with as many participants as possible," said Mission Australia's NT Director, Phillip Leslie.

"We're particularly interested to see if their concern about financial security has increased," said Mr Leslie.

The annual survey gives young Australians the opportunity to comment on a range of topical issues, including:

·              what young people value

·              issues that are of concern to young people

·              where young people turn for advice and support

·              the extent of involvement in community activities

·              whom they admire.

In 2008, Young Territorians nominated drugs, family conflict, and abuse as areas of most concern.

The survey is also available through the DHF Office of Youth Affairs, Mission Australia services, secondary schools, TAFE facilities, and libraries.
