Young Carers Award Winner

The winners of this year's NT Young Achiever Awards were announced last Saturday night at the annual gala presentation dinner held at the Holiday Inn Esplanade. Nine category winners were awarded and the overall 2009 Channel Nine Young Achiever of the Year was announced.

Brilee Jaques, 18, of Bayview is the winner of the Department of Health and Families Young Carer's Award category of the 2009 Northern Territory Young Achiever Awards.

The Young Achiever Awards acknowledge, encourage and promote the positive achievements of young Territorians between 14 and 26 years of age.

The Department of Health and Families Aged and Disability Program is a sponsor of the award. Director Penny Fielding congratulated Brillee. "Brilee's sister, Honor, has Down syndrome, and Brilee has cared for her with dedication and love.

"In 2007 her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and Brilee temporarily suspended her high school studies to help support her family, which includes another younger sister. Being from a single parent family has not deterred Brilee's determination.

"Brilee has cared for her mother and two sisters around the clock and organised hospital trips for her mother-much more than what's expected of an average 18 year old. Brilee's family understands the sacrifices she makes, caring for them on her own without complaint, and they are intensely proud of her.

"Brilee is an amazing young woman deserving of a bright future," Ms Fielding added.

As the winner of the Department of Health and Families Young Carer's Award, Brilee received a $2000 TIO Build Up Saver Account and a magnificent trophy.

Congratulations to our 2009 Young Carer's Award Winner!
