breastscreenNT Service Visits Nhulunbuy

The Department of Health and Families visiting breastscreenNT service will be holding free breast screening clinics at the Public Screening Facility at Gove District Hospital from 25th August to 5th September.

Territory women aged 50-69 years are encouraged to have a mammogram (breast x-ray) every two years to screen for breast cancers. Screening mammograms are for women without any breast symptoms.

Over 75% of breast cancers are diagnosed in women aged over 50.

The early detection and treatment of breast cancer offers women a better chance of recovery from breast cancer. Screening mammograms may detect breast cancers too small to be felt.

The 'breast awareness' approach encourages women to be aware of the general look and feel of their breasts. This is important for women of all ages, even those having regular screening mammograms. Changes to look out for may include new lumps, nipple discharge, or unusual changes. If women have any concerns about their breasts they are encouraged to see their doctor without delay.

Screening is free and all women, without breast symptoms, aged 50-69 years are encouraged to attend.

Appointments can be made by phoning 13 20 50.

Early detection is vital to surviving breast cancer.
