Signage Requirements

Follow the signs to I know where you can and can't smoke

  • All restaurants, cafes and dining areas are required to display signage consistent with the regulations as of 1 January 2003.
  • All eating places are sent a standard 'No Smoking' sign.
  • Businesses have the option of designing and producing their own 'No Smoking' signs, providing they comply with the regulations.
  • Outdoor venues where seating is provided also have signs to distinguish smoking areas from nonsmoking areas.
  • For an occupier who breaches the 'No Smoking' signage requirements, a $100 infringement notice may result, or a fine of up to $11,000 if the offence is proven in court.
  • In places where smoking is allowed, the business may communicate the smoking area in whatever way they consider appropriate.
