CanNET NT

The Cancer Services Networkds National Demonstration Program (CanNET) is funded by the Australian Government through its National Cancer Agency, Cancer Australia. Cancer Australia is funding seven CanNET sites across, including one in the Northern Territory. Together these projects have the potential to provide coverage for more than eight million Australians.

CanNET aims to improve access to quality cancer services, particularly for people who currently have poorer cancer outcomes such as those living in rural and regional areas and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

This will be accomplished through:

  • the establishment of cancer networks that link together health professionals working in different services.
  • ongoing support for professional development for cancer health care providers.
  • consumer involvement in the planning and development of cancer services.
  • better supporting GPs in prompt diagnosis and early referral to a multidisciplinary team assessment
  • multidisciplinary care
  • a systematised approach to quality improvement; and evidence based protocols

The key outcome of CanNET NT is to promote the development of a collaborative network involving consumers and service providers in order to facilitate a seamless patient journey. This will involve:

  • The development and implementation of a 10-year NT Cancer Plan  that includes a service delivery model and protocols to guide referral and treatment pathways within the NT.
  • the development of agreed referral and treatment pathways for both health professionals and cancer consumers. For further information see our Cancer Pathways page.
  • A Directory of Services available to consumers and service providers (hard copy and web-based).
  • The development and promotion of multidisciplinary teams to support evidence-based, coordinated cancer care treatment recommendations for people diagnosed with cancer within the NT. For further information see our  Multidisciplinary Teams page
  • Ongoing education and training of the workforce to promote excellence in the provision of cancer care. For further information see Cancer Learning.
  • Resources that support primary prevention and early cancer diagnosis, particularly for Indigenous peoples living in rural and remote areas of the NT.
  • Establishing regional cancer groups  consisting of service providers and consumers to give input on regional issues pertaining on cancer services.
