Support Services

A diagnosis of cancer can be a frightening and overwhelming challenge for you, your family, friends and collegues. It is important to reach out for support and information as you move through the cancer journey. In the initial stages when your treatment plan is being finalised, you may feel overwhelmed and this is where the Cancer Council NT can assist. The Northern Territory Department of Health has also published a Cancer Services - Northern Territory Directory which will help to provide an overview of the pathway ahead and the services available locally. A wealth of information is available on the internet in a range of languages and we have provided a weblinks summary for your convenience.

Many cancer treatments are available in the Northern Territory and it is important to understand where these services are located and how they may support you through your cancer journey. Some treatments may require lengthy stays away from home and depending on where you decide to be treated, you may be eligible for financial assistance. The Alan Walker Cancer Care Centre (AWCCC) in Darwin provides state-of-the-art radiation therapy and chemotherapy services to patients and holds radiation outreach clinics in Alice Springs (contact AWCCC on 08 8944 8220). The Northern Territory Department of Health has also published Patient Pathways booklets in five tumour streams, which give an overview to the types of tests and treatments required on your cancer journey.
