Research Institutions
The harsh climate of the Northern Territory combined with its remoteness provides many challenges for Health Service delivery but also many interesting research opportunities.
In Alice Springs, Baker IDI is Australia's leading health and medical research institute dedicated to reducing ill health and mortality caused by the effects of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, two insidious and complex diseases wreaking havoc in the community.
Menzies School of Health in Darwin also works to discover better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat disease, tackle the social determinants of health and deliver better health services. Our researchers are helping to break the cycle of ill-health facing many Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
The Lowitja Institute also has a branch in Darwin and formed to build a national strategic research agenda to improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The work of Aboriginal Resources Development Services Inc. (ARDS) also provides groundbreaking work in the area of Indigenous capacity building, health research and resources development. Committed to stand with and empower the Yolngu people of north-east Arnhem Land. The Yolngu world view and language is central to their way of working.
