Training

Royal Darwin Hospital is a Teaching Hospital, with strong links to the Flinders University and James Cook University Medical Schools, and provides a comprehensive Training program for junior medical officers. You will be encouraged to attend weekly Training sessions covering broad areas of professional development.

In each of the terms you undertake during the year, you will receive weekly formal teaching sessions as well as "teaching on the run" from consultants and registrars during ward rounds and in day to day work. Most departments will have formal grand rounds, journal clubs and specific sessions such as radiology meetings each week, and you will be expected and supported in attending these.

There is a general focus for Training and experience in PGY1 and PGY2, enabling you to consolidate your knowledge, skills and experience, as well as provide you with opportunities to explore potential careers. The Training and experiences in these two years follow the Australian Curriculum Framework for Junior Doctors. In PGY2 and beyond you will be offered the opportunity to follow pathways that prepare you for vocational Training programs. Opportunities for rural and remote practice are a key feature of these pathways. Pre-vocational pathways include one designed to offer a general but well rounded experience leading to a diverse range of vocational training, as well as tailored pathways leading to specific vocational programs.

Pathways can be structured over 1 year, 2 years or 3 years, and can include programs of academic study. Academic positions available include Diploma of Obstetrics, Diploma of Paediatrics and Graduate Diploma of Indigenous and Tropical Child Health. A number of pre-vocational trainees undertake Master of Public Health studies through the Menzies School of Health Research and James Cook University.

The hospital also collaborates with General Practice Training providers in programs designed for urban and rural general practice training, including proceduralist training. All posts are recognised by the General Practitioner Colleges for Fellowship Training.

Pre-vocational trainees have access to study leave and a study allowance.

Orientation

RMOs undertake an Orientation program prior to commencing ward duties. Key elements include cultural competencies, use of the extensive electronic health systems used throughout the hospital, and an introduction to management of unique and complex patient presentations.

Orientation to specific departments and the team you will be attached to takes place at the commencement of ward work.
