Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Unit

Northern Territory Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus (SHBBV) services are governed by the NT wide Sexual Health Advisory Group (SHAG). This group provides high-level advice on the NT SHBBV program, priority setting, research directions and resource allocation.

The Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus (SHBBV) Unit, situated in the Centre for Disease Control, is responsible for the delivery of comprehensive SHBBV services to urban and remote communities throughout the Northern territory which include:

  • Needle and Syringe Programs (NSPs)
  • Research and Surveillance
  • Policies and Guidelines

Clinic 34, located in Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Nhulunbuy are specialised sexual health services for the assessment and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STI) and blood borne viruses (BBV), including HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C. The SHBBV Unit provides urban and remote health services including community STI and BBV screening, men's and women's health workshops for health practitioners and ongoing support of STI management. Other activities include surveillance and follow-up of diagnosed infections, education initiatives, support and guidance for primary care providers and harm reduction initiatives including needle and syringe programs (NSP). Commonwealth and NT government funding is administered to non-governmental organisations for service delivery in BBV, STI and NSPs.
