NT Families and Children Child Protection Branch has primary responsibility for implementation of the Care and Protection of Children Act 2007. This Act provides for the protection and care of children and the promotion of family welfare.

Changes in legislation
Child Protection System Reform has involved the drafting of new legislation to better protect children and young people and optimise their wellbeing. The Care and Protection of Children Act 2007 was passed by the Legislative Assembly in November 2007. This Act commence in a staged manner throughout 2008, and notice of commencement of various sections appear in the Government Gazette. The Community Welfare Act 1983 is no longer operational.
