Role
The Chiropractors & Osteopaths Board of the Northern Territory is a statutory body responsible for ensuring the public is protected through the regulation of Chiropractors and Osteopaths registered in the Northern Territory.
The Chiropractors & Osteopaths Board carries out this mandate by:
- Ensuring that all Chiropractors & Osteopaths have received educational preparation to an agreed national standard;
- Dealing with issues of conduct and taking any disciplinary action as required;
- Administering the framework under which impaired Chiropractors & Osteopaths can be rehabilitated without necessarily losing their license to practice;
- Assisting to improve Chiropractors or Osteopath's performance should it be found to be below accepted professional standards, and
- Ensuring that all Chiropractors & Osteopaths either currently registered or intending to be registered are competent and fit to practise.
The Health Professions Licensing Authority (HPLA) provides a bureau service to the Chiropractors & Osteopaths Board and carries out administrative duties as directed by it.
The objectives of the Health Practitioners Act 2004 (the Act) requires the Chiropractors & Osteopaths Board to:
- Protect and promote the health and safety of the people of the Territory;
- Promote the highest standard of professional health care practice in the Territory;
- Determine the standards for Registration and enrolment of health practitioners and for professional health care practice in the Territory, and
- Facilitate the continuing competence of health practitioners in the Territory.

Chiropractor and Osteopath Register
The register identifies registrants as having either full registration/enrolment or conditional registration/enrolment.
Conditional registration/enrolment means that there are some restrictions on the person's practice. Such restrictions are diverse in nature and further information about the conditions applying to a particular registrant can be obtained by contacting us.

Chiropractors or Osteopaths who are not currently registered in a State or Territory of Australia or New Zealand can apply for Registration in the Northern Territory under the Health Practitioners Act. Overseas trained osteopaths are to complete an assessment by either the Victorian, New South Wales, or Western Australia Osteopaths Registration Boards. | Feb 2008 |
