Role

The Occupational Therapists Board of the Northern Territory is a statutory body responsible for ensuring the public is protected through the regulation of occupational therapists registered in the Northern Territory.

The Occupational Therapists Board carries out this mandate by:

  • Ensuring that all occupational therapists have received educational preparation to an agreed national standard;
  • Dealing with issues of conduct and taking any disciplinary action as required;
  • Administering the framework under which impaired occupational therapists can be rehabilitated without necessarily losing their license to practice;
  • Assisting to improve occupational therapists performance should it be found to be below accepted professional standards, and
  • Ensuring that all occupational therapists either currently registered or intending to be registered are competent and fit to practise.

The Health Professions Licensing Authority (HPLA) provides a bureau service to the Occupational Therapists Board and carries out administrative duties as directed by it.

The objectives of the Health Practitioners Act 2004 (the Act) requires the Occupational Therapists Board to:

  • Protect and promote the health and safety of the people of the Territory;
  • Promote the highest standard of professional health care practice in the Territory;
  • Determine the standards for Registration and enrolment of health practitioners and for professional health care practice in the Territory, and

Facilitate the continuing competence of health practitioners in the Territory.

Occupational Therapists Register

The register identifies registrants as having either full registration/enrolment or conditional registration/enrolment.

Conditional registration/enrolment means that there are some restrictions on the person's practice. Such restrictions are diverse in nature and further information about the conditions applying to a particular registrant can be obtained by contacting us.

Occupational Therapists who hold current Registration in South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland or New Zealand can apply for Registration in the Northern Territory under the Mutual Recognition Act or the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Act.February 2008

 Occupational Therapists who are not currently registered in a State or Territory of Australia or New Zealand can apply for Registration in the Northern Territory under the Health Practitioners Act.March 2008

Overseas trained Occupational Therapists must apply to the Council of Occupational Therapists Registration Boards (Aust and NZ) Inc COTRB to have their qualifications assessed.
