Role

The Optometrists Board of the Northern Territory is a statutory body responsible for ensuring the public is protected through the regulation of optometrists registered in the Northern Territory.

The Optometrists Board carries out this mandate by:

  • Ensuring that all optometrists have received educational preparation to an agreed national standard;
  • Dealing with issues of conduct and taking any disciplinary action as required;
  • Administering the framework under which impaired optometrists can be rehabilitated without necessarily losing their license to practice;
  • Assisting to improve optometrists performance should it be found to be below accepted professional standards, and
  • Ensuring that all optometrists either currently registered or intending to be registered are competent and fit to practise.

The Health Professions Licensing Authority (HPLA) provides a bureau service to the Optometrists Board and carries out administrative duties as directed by it.

The objectives of the Health Practitioners Act 2004 (the Act) requires the Optometrists Board to:

  • Protect and promote the health and safety of the people of the Territory;
  • Promote the highest standard of professional health care practice in the Territory;
  • Determine the standards for Registration and enrolment of health practitioners and for professional health care practice in the Territory, and
  • Facilitate the continuing competence of health practitioners in the Territory.

Register and Registration Forms 

The register identifies registrants as having either full registration/enrolment or conditional registration/enrolment.

Conditional registration/enrolment means that there are some restrictions on the person's practice. Such restrictions are diverse in nature and further information about the conditions applying to a particular registrant can be obtained by contacting us.

If you are an optometrist and have completed a course in ocular therapeutics accredited by the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand (OCANZ), you are able to apply for authorisation to practise in a restricted practice area. This allows you to sell or supply scheduled medicines for the treatment of ocular conditions. Please read the Authorisation to Practise in a Restricted Practise Area - Ocular Therapeutics Policy before completing the relevant application form.

Optometrists that hold current Registration in another State or Territory of Australia or New Zealand can apply for Registration in the Northern Territory under the Mutual Recognition Act or Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Act. This also applies to optometrists currently registered in another jurisdiction with authorisation to practise in the restricted practice area of Ocular Therapeutics.Feb 2008

If you hold a qualification in optometry, which was gained from outside of Australian or New Zealand, you will be required to undertake a qualifying examination that is conducted by OCANZ. For requirements in relation to this examination and full details please contact OCANZ
