Role

The Physiotherapists Board of the Northern Territory is a statutory body responsible for ensuring the public is protected through the regulation of Physiotherapists registered in the Northern Territory.

The Physiotherapists Board carries out this mandate by:

  • Ensuring that all Physiotherapists have received educational preparation to an agreed national standard;
  • Dealing with issues of conduct and taking any disciplinary action as required;
  • Administering the framework under which impaired Physiotherapists can be rehabilitated without necessarily losing their license to practice;
  • Assisting to improve Physiotherapists performance should it be found to be below accepted professional standards, and
  • Ensuring that all Physiotherapists either currently registered or intending to be registered are competent and fit to practise.

The Health Professions Licensing Authority (HPLA) provides a bureau service to the Physiotherapists Board and carries out administrative duties as directed by it.

The objectives of the Health Practitioners Act 2004 (the Act) requires the Physiotherapists Board to:

  • Protect and promote the health and safety of the people of the Territory;
  • Promote the highest standard of professional health care practice in the Territory;
  • Determine the standards for Registration and enrolment of health practitioners and for professional health care practice in the Territory, and
  • Facilitate the continuing competence of health practitioners in the Territory.

Physiotherapists Register

The register identifies registrants as having either full registration/enrolment or conditional registration/enrolment.

Conditional registration/enrolment means that there are some restrictions on the person's practice. Such restrictions are diverse in nature and further information about the conditions applying to a particular registrant can be obtained by contacting us.

Physiotherapists who hold current full Registration in a State or Territory of Australia or New Zealand can apply for Registration in the Northern Territory under the Mutual Recognition Act or the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Act.Feb 2008

Physiotherapists who are not currently registered in another State or Territory of Australia or New Zealand can apply for Registration in the Northern Territory under the Health Practitioners Act.Feb 2008

If you have completed an education program in physiotherapy in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland or Canada, have current Registration in one of these countries and you have worked as a physiotherapist for a minimum of 2 years, you are eligible to apply for conditional Registration to work in the Northern Territory for a maximum period of 12 months. Please read the Information Sheet Overseas Educated Physiotherapists before completing an application form.Feb 2008


If you have completed an education program as a Physiotherapist in a country not previously mentioned you are not immediately eligible to apply for Registration and will need to contact the Australian Physiotherapy Council and arrange to complete the Australian Examining Committee for Overseas physiotherapists (AECOP) assessment process.
