Role

The Psychologists Board of the Northern Territory is a statutory body responsible for ensuring the public is protected through the regulation of Psychologists registered in the Northern Territory. The Psychologists Board carries out this mandate by:

  • Ensuring that all Psychologists have received educational preparation to an agreed national standard;
  • Dealing with issues of conduct and taking any disciplinary action as required;
  • Administering the framework under which impaired Psychologists can be rehabilitated without necessarily losing their license to practice;
  • Assisting to improve Psychologists performance should it be found to be below accepted professional standards, and
  • Ensuring that all Psychologists either currently registered or intending to be registered are competent and fit to practise.

The Health Professions Licensing Authority (HPLA) provides a bureau service to the Psychologists Board and carries out administrative duties as directed by it. The objectives of the Health Practitioners Act 2004 (the Act) requires the Psychologists Board to:

  • Protect and promote the health and safety of the people of the Territory;
  • Promote the highest standard of professional health care practice in the Territory;
  • Determine the standards for Registration and enrolment of health practitioners and for professional health care practice in the Territory,
  • Facilitate the continuing competence of health practitioners in the Territory.

Psychologists Register 

The register identifies registrants as having either full registration/enrolment or conditional registration/enrolment.

Conditional registration/enrolment means that there are some restrictions on the person's practice. Such restrictions are diverse in nature and further information about the conditions applying to a particular registrant can be obtained by contacting us.

Please refer to the Entitlement to Registration Policy before completing an application for registration.

Psychologists who hold current full Registration in Australia or New Zealand can apply for Registration in the Northern Territory under the Mutual Recognition Act or the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Act.Feb 2008

Psychologists who are not currently registered in another State or Territory of Australia or New Zealand can apply for Registration in the Northern Territory under the Health Practitioners Act.

Psychologists who have recently completed an approved qualification can apply for conditional Registration and are required to complete the requirements of the Supervised Practise Policy and Guidelines.
