image: "Aerial Medical Service Plane" The Department operates the Aerial Medical Service in the Top End of the Northern Territory, and funds the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) to provide this service in Central Australia.
Top End region
The Northern Territory Aerial Medical Service (NTAMS) provides medical advice, assistance and a specialist retrieval service to all people living and working in rural and remote areas of the Top End, ships at sea, and oil and gas companies in the Timor Sea.
NTAMS has 3 bases located in Darwin, Katherine and Gove, and operates a fleet of 4 medically-dedicated, pressurized Beechcraft Super Kingairs. Each aircraft is configured with 2 stretchers and 4 seats and is fully equipped to transport the critically ill.
An aviation-trained registered nurse accompanies all retrievals and an experienced doctor or specialist (Emergency Physician, Anaesthetist, Paediatrician) is available when required.
