Aboriginal Liaison

We have a number of Aboriginal Liaison Officers on staff who are able to provide a range of culturally appropriate support services.  These include interpreting, family meetings, assistance with Centrelink forms, banking and complaints.  Aboriginal Liaison can be contacted through the switchboard on 8951 7777. Boarding

The Paediatric Ward actively encourages family participation in care and has been designed to accommodate boarders/carers.

In the adult wards there are limited facilities for Boarding in.  Boarders/carers are permitted if the patient meets documented criteria and if it does not compromise the safe management of the ward and the well being of the patient.  Please make enquiries of the nursing staff if you should wish to stay with your relative.  

Call System

A call bell for nursing staff is located on the bedside handset and in all toilet and shower areas.  The handset also controls TV, radio and bedside lighting.

Chaplain - Pastoral Care Services

The chaplain is a member of the health care team and can offer support and comfort in times of need.  Members of all denominations visit the hospital regularly and can be called at your request.  Patients and visitors are invited to use the Chapel on the ground floor. Children's Ward

The Paediatric Ward actively encourages family participation in care and has been designed to accommodate boarders/carers. Indoor and outdoor play areas are provided.  Children must be supervised in the play areas at all times.

Continuing Care Ward

The Continuing Care Ward was established to meet the growing need for high quality continued care and support for patients undergoing a rehabilitation program or transitional care in Alice Springs. Patients benefit from individualised care packages which focus on helping them to achieve their maximum potential in everyday tasks which in turn results in safer, more effective discharges back to their communities/home or on to another care provider.

Drover Volunteer Service

Drover volunteers provide a caring, efficient service that enhances the activities of the hospital's paid staff. Drovers staff the hospital information booth, assist with tea and coffee rounds in the Emergency Department, distribute magazines, books, cards and games to patients on the wards, and may assist with transportation. Volunteers are identified by their blue and white striped tabards and their identification badges. Emergency Department

The Alice Springs Hospital Emergency Department (ED) averages more than 33,000 episodes of service per year. Patients should come to ED if their problem is urgent and needs immediate treatment.  Read more.

Food Services Department

The Food Services Department is Foodsafe accredited.  The meals provided on the 14 day menu cycle follow the Australian Dietary Guidelines.  Hospital dietitians provide a consultation process to assist patients who have special dietary requirements.  The hospital dietitians can be contacted through your nurse.

Hospital in the Home

Hospital in the home (HITH) is a service that administers therapy and interventions usually associated with hospital, in the patient's home or in a place of temporary residence such as a hostel. Eligibility for Hospital in the Home is restricted to those patients who have a stable clinical condition that is suitable for home management.

Intensive Care Unit - High Dependency Unit - Coronary Care Unit

Intensive Care or Critical Care refers to the special treatment given to patients who suffer from a serious medical problem. This unit is a nationally accredited Level 2 unit incorporating 4 ICU beds and 4 HDU/CCU that look after Adult and Paediatric patients. Read more.

Interpreters - Aboriginal Support

Every attempt will be made to find an interpreter to assist communications between you and your doctor or other hospital staff.  Aboriginal Liaison Officers  are on staff and can assist with a range of Aboriginal languages.

Kiosk

The Kiosk is located on the ground floor and has sweets, light lunches, magazines and newspapers and toiletry articles for purchase. Telstra phone cards and stamps are also available. Kiosk hours are:

  • Weekdays: 8.00am to 6.00 pm
  • Saturdays 8. 30am to 3.00 pm
  • Sundays: 10.00 am to 3.00 pm
  • Public Holidays:  10.00 am  to 3.00 pm

Lounge Areas

Lounge areas are situated in some ward areas and on the corridors and may be used by patients and visitors. Ask staff to direct you to the nearest lounge area.

Outdoor areas are also provided. Please advise staff if you are leaving the ward.

Mail

Mail is delivered each weekday. Letters can be posted at the Hospital Registry on the 1st floor.  Postage stamps are available from the Kiosk on the ground floor.

Maternity Unit

Provides a full maternity service including midwife clinics and early discharge. A variety of birthing choices is supported by the Alice Springs Hospital Maternity Unit.

Early discharge

Mothers will be supported at home by visits from a hospital based midwife for 2-3 days.

Community nurses provided a Maternal and Child Health Service including home visits, well baby clinics and immunisations at Flynn Drive Community Health Centre

Other Maternal and Child Health Services are available from:

  • Congress Alukura
  • Remote Health Clinics
  • Tennant Creek Community Health Centre

Birth

Fathers and other support persons may attend during the birth at the discretion of mother and delivery team

Babies

  • Usually stay in the room with mum
  • Should only be handled by mother, father and siblings
  • First photographs of baby are available on request

Registration of baby's birth

  • This is the responsibility of the parents and should occur within 60 days of birth
  • For further information please refer to the ward clerk

Special Care Nursery

Provides a safe an supportive environment for newborn babies (and their family) that require specialist care.  Visitors are usually limited to two at one time.  As a health precaution, children under 12 years other than siblings are not encouraged to visit.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy services are available to inpatients upon referral by the clinical staff.  The hours of operation are 8.00 am to 4.20 pm Monday through Friday

Outpatients Clinics

Doctors provide a range of specialist services and follow up care in the Outpatients Department on the ground floor.  You may be referred to an outpatient clinic before or after your hospital admission.  

Palliative Care

The hospital provides two palliative care suites in the Medical Ward for the comfort of patients and their families.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is available to inpatients upon referral of the clinical staff.  Physiotherapy also provides Outpatient Service on a limited basis by referral

The hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8.00 am to 4.20 pm

Radiology Services

Radiology Services are provided privately by Dr Jones & Partners.  Radiology is located on the ground floor of the hospital and provides services for both in and out patients. Appointments are necessary for some procedures, information on appointments can be obtained on 8951 7873.  No appointments are necessary for general x-rays which are performed between 8.15 am and 4.30 pm Monday through Friday.

Rehabilitation Services

Rehabilitation have the services of a Rehabilitation Specialist as well as a Prothetist/Orthotist who are supported by a range of professional staff including Physiotherapist, Speech Pathologist, Social Worker and Occupational Therapist. and Rehabilitation Nurse.   Referrals to Rehabilitation Services are made by your doctor.

Renal Services

Renal Services are provided off campus in the Flynn Drive Community Health Centre.  Services include chronic kidney disease coordination, peritoneal dialysis coordination, home haemodialysis coordination and transplant coordination.  The 24 chair Renal Dialysis Unit at Flynn Drive also supports an 8 chair acute facility within the hospital  The Renal Dialysis Unit is open between 7.00 am to 9.30 pm Monday through Saturdays with on-call nurses available 24 hours. Security

The hospital has an internal surveillance system at a number of locations in the hospital.  These surveillance monitors are operated 24 hours per day 7 days per week.  Security guards are on duty 24 hours per day 7 days per week and the focus of their duty is to maintain an orderly environment within the hospital.

ASH maintains a zero tolerance approach to aggression.  Swearing and poor behaviour will not be tolerated and police assistance will be sought if necessary.

Short Stay Unit

The Short Stay Unit is a 12 bed ward designed to accommodate patients whose treatment in hospital is not expected to exceed 48 hours.

Social Workers

  • Patients may request assistance from the social worker who will seek ways to ease problems brought on by admission.
  • Social workers are available to provide individual and family counselling.
  • They also coordinate and provide a broader welfare service.
  • Social workers can be contacted through the switchboard or ask your nurse or doctor to contact them.

Speech Pathology

Speech Pathology services are available to inpatients upon referral by the clinical staff.  The hours of operation are 8.00 am to 4.20 pm Monday through Friday.
