Aboriginal Support Services

Role

Aboriginal Support Services have been a part of the Alice Springs Hospital since 1992.  The team comprises
six Aboriginal Liaison Officers, a Team Leader and a Manager who all now work under the Aboriginal Support Services Unit.

All Aboriginal Liaison Officers speak a Central Australian Aboriginal language and are Nationally Accredited Interpreters who will be undertaking medical terminology training in 2008.

The Aboriginal Support Services Unit supports Aboriginal patients, their families and medical staff with:

  • Interpreting
  • Cultural Brokerage
  • Practical Welfare Support Service

The Team also provide cross-cultural awareness educational sessions to all staff of the Alice Springs Hospital to ensure that Aboriginal people feel culturally safe when visiting the hospital.
