Intern and Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Positions at the Alice Springs Hospital

Alice Springs Hospital employs about 29 junior doctors, interns (8) and RMOs (21) plus several on rotation on the prevocational training scheme for general practice. They are normally employed on 12 month contracts, usually starting January; some positions are occupied by junior staff on rotation from other hospitals. Most positions are available for general applicants. General positions (intern level) are available in general medicine, paediatrics, surgery and emergency medicine - not all applicants can undertake terms at intern level in paediatrics. The surgical position includes orthopaedics. RMO positions are available in all these plus renal medicine and Intensive Care. Rotations to psychiatry, anaesthetics, rural general practice, and obstetrics and gynaecology (approved for DRANZCOG) are possible. Darwin Hospital (RDH) rotations are possible and Tennant Creek Hospital (TCH) in the past. Full registration with the Medical Board is needed for TCH rotation. Most junior staff rotate every three months to get a broad experience.

There is a very active teaching programme with all departments having protected teaching time. There are lunchtime teaching meetings on Tuesday (X-rays) Wednesday and Friday all year plus Thursday (intern teaching) for 9 months.

Applicants for posts should submit a CV with at the names of at least 2 referees (more reduces the chance of delays). Applicants interested in jobs and who meet the requirements should apply to Medical Recruitment, Alice Springs Hospital PO Box 2234 Alice Springs NT 0871 or email judith.martinez@nt.gov.au.

Alice Springs Hospital RMO Requirements

Registration is the critical issue. The NT Medical Board has similar requirements to other Australian Medical Boards. Registration is no problem for Australian and New Zealand medical graduates or overseas graduates who have completed their Australian Medical Council (AMC) examinations 1 and 2.

Doctors who have passed part 1 AMC examination will usually be supported by the hospital for limited registration. Doctors with full UK, US, Canadian or NZ registration (even if not originally trained there) may be granted limited registration under the AMC Competent Authority Model. Doctors from the UK with PLAB must have obtained full registration and have been in formal employment (not attachment, observerships or locums).

Mandatory English language requirements are laid down by the NT Medical Board and AMC and the latest can be found on their websites.
