About goNT
goNT is a whole of government and community initiative to promote physical activity and encourage Territorians to be more active in their everyday life. It is driven and monitored by the Chief Minister's Active Living Council , responsible for implementing and monitoring the goNTstrategy and first year action plan The first year action plan has been reported on. Read the annual report2007 (Adobe PDF document - 254KB) The subsequent action plan is being re-developed to reflect changes in priorities within physical activity promotion.
Together, Government and the Community will work to provide programs, policies and environments that support people become more active in the places where they live, study and work.
How active are Territorians?
In 2003, the Northern Territory Physical Activity Survey, non-Indigenous population was undertaken by the Department of Health and Community Services (DHCS), in partnership with the National Heart Foundation (NT Division). It found that just 55% of non-Indigenous Territorians aged 18-54 years engaged in sufficient physical activity for health benefits, that is, participating in 30 minutes of moderate activity on most days of the week (for a total of 150 minutes/week).
Chief Minister's Active Living Council
The Chief Minister's Active Living Council (CMALC) is responsible for overseeing and monitoring the implementation of the goNT Strategy and Action Plan.
Chaired by the Chief Minister, the CMALC includes representatives from:
- Department of Lands and Planning
- Department of the Chief Minister
- Department of Natural Resources, Environment, The Arts and Sport
- Department of Health and Families
- Department of Education and Training
- Department of Health and Ageing
- Local Government Association of the Northern Territory
- Good Health Alliance, Northern Territory
