The "Health at the Heart of Australia" Conference was held 13th - 15th August 2008, in Alice Springs. It was a joint initiative between the Chronic Diseases Network NT (CDN) and the Australian Cardiovascular Health and Rehabilitation Association (ACRA).
The 12th Annual Conference of the Chronic Diseases Network of the Northern Territory and the 18th Annual Scientific Meeting and Exhibition of the Australian Cardiovascular Health and Rehabilitation Association had a focus on cardiovascular health within the context of chronic disease. Challenges for indigenous health and remote health service delivery were core underlying themes of the conference, with a range of other areas covered within the program, including Models of Care (primary, tertiary, multi-disciplinary, rehabilitation, palliative care); Prevention and Population Health (community, individuals, health professionals) and Workforce (recruitment, retention and quality improvement).
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among Australians including Territorians. In terms of "Closing the Gap" for Indigenous Australians, 70% of the difference in life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians can be attributed to chronic disease, with cardiovascular disease being the most common.
The Chronic Diseases Network of the NT and the Australian Cardiovascular Health and Rehabilitation Association represent two groups of multidisciplinary health professionals dedicated to the support, education and networking of people working in the fields of cardiovascular health and chronic disease. We anticipated up to 300 delegates from across the NT and interstate for the 2008 conference.
Keynote presentations were provided by a range of distinguished professionals in the field of cardiovascular health. Notably, all the presenters were Australian, a strong reflection of the depth, scope and quality of the work being done in Australia. The standard of speakers and presenters was very high and all sessions were well attended. All speakers generously made their presentations available to the CDN to download to the website.
