Royal Darwin Hospital Unit

Renal Ward 7A

Located on the 7th floor, the unit overlooks native bushland to the Timor Sea (just wait till you experience sunset, sunrise or a wet season storm from here!). Royal Darwin Hospital services the top half of the "Top End". Our patients come from a diverse range of cultural and geographical backgrounds.

7A Renal consists of 2 areas. The 10-bed ward and the 5-station haemodialysis unit caters for acute, chronic and end stage renal failure patients. We are the unit where most "Top End" renal patients commence their chosen therapy. The ward environment caters for renal investigations, acute admissions, access problems, renal surgery and peritoneal dialysis. We create and revise AVFs, insert temporary and tunnelled lines and attend Tenckhoff insertions.

The haemodialysis unit caters for acute admissions, plasmapheresis, inpatient dialysis, new patients and patients with complex medical or social issues too complex to be managed by satellite units. The unit operates Monday through to Saturday. Nurses from the hospital and satellite units staff dialysis after hours.

No day is ever the same. Our small ensures we have 'outlying patients' in other wards. Dialysis staff are sometimes required to care for patients in ED, ICU and CCU.

Our patients are complex medically and socially. With over 20 language groups in our catchment area we are often presented with unique and complex issues, so there is always something to learn. Our unit provides so much more than just excellent nursing care. A tremendous sense of achievement can be found from the challenging situations presented to us.

Come to 7A with an open heart and open mind. You'll be rewarded. Approaching your job from a different angle and seeing things in a different light, ensures you'll always be learning more about yourself.

If you're looking for something special, this may be the place for you.
