Tiwi Dialysis Unit

A twenty minute flight north from Darwin will find you in the idyllic Tiwi Islands. The township of Nguiu is the main settlement on Bathurst Island and located on the foreshore with a magnificent view of the Apsley Strait is the Tiwi Dialysis Unit.

This unit has five dialysis chairs and is staffed from NRU. Staff fly in and out weekly and are supported locally by a support officer and one patient who works on a casual basis. At present there are eight patients dialysing at the unit. It was originally set up as a self-care unit however overtime this criteria has been relaxed a little to allow less able patients to return home to their community.
