Sexual Assault Awareness Month - April

Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) originated in the USA in the 1980s as a week-long awareness raising event. SAAM is now an internationally recognised campaign held every April.

SAAM aims to raise public awareness, and to educate communities and individuals about the prevention of all forms of sexual violence.

Events are held through the month, culminating in a Day of Action which brings communities together to:

  • Challenge the secrecy, shame and isolation surrounding sexual violence;
  • Work towards the prevention and elimination of sexual violence;
  • Provide support and understanding to survivors; and
  • Promote justice and condemn sexual violence.
