Pap Smear Register

what is it? 

  • A centralised and confidential computer database, which records Pap smears and other cervical tests of NT women.
  • It is operated by the well women's cancer screening, Department of Health and Families, located at Casuarina Health Services, 9 Scatutchio Street, Casuarina NT 0811 or PO Box 40596, Casuarina NT 0811.
  • It commenced in March 1996, as part of the Commonwealth Government's initiative to reduce the morbidity and mortality of cervical cancer amongst Australian women.
  • All information is protected by legislation from the NT government.

what does it do?

  • Records the results of all smears and follow up cervical care/treatment of NT women.
  • Sends reminder letters to women and their smear takers when followup care/treatment or next smear is overdue.

what are the benefits?

  • Assists in reducing the morbidity and mortality of cervical cancer.
  • Acts as a back up reminder service for Health Practitioners.
  • Helps to make sure any abnormal results are followed up.
  • Keeps a record of a woman's cervical history. This is especially helpful when changing doctors or moving interstate.
  • Health Practitioners can contact the Register to obtain cervical history to assist in determining appropriate treatment of a new patient.
  • Provides unidentifiable information to Department of Health and Families to assist with Health Promotion strategies and Budget allocations.

what if I don't want to be on it?

  • Tell your smear taker at the time of the visit, or the treating doctor in the case of further treatment, that you wish for your results to stay off the Register. This would need to be done each time a cervical test is done.
  • Contact the Register in writing or by phone to request the information already on it be removed.
