The Northern Territory Government is reforming its child protection system. An essential part of this reform agenda is the creation of a Children's Commissioner to advocate for protected children and represent their best interests at all levels of government and community. This new and independent position exercises the statutory powers of the Care and Protection of Children Act, 2007 in so far as it relates to protected children.
The role and person
The Children's Commissioner will independently review complaints, oversight the rollout of reforms, advocate for children and also identify any further improvements to strengthen the system. The Commissioner will monitor the implementation of recommendations in response to the Little Children are Sacred Report.
The statutory role will be accountable and report annually to Parliament.
The person will have
- considerable understanding of the child protection system
- an understanding of indigenous, generational, political and social issues
- considerable experience in working with children
- extensive experience operating within legislative and policy frameworks
- high-level negotiation, communication and collaborative skills
- the ability to lead and manage a statutory office
- Tertiary qualifications
